Why creators paid in crypto need this
If a sponsor, client or student pays you in crypto, the IRS treats it as income at its US-dollar value on the day you receive it. Independent contractors also count it as self-employment income (IRS virtual currency FAQ, Q9 and Q10, last reviewed 30 Jun 2026). When you later sell, swap or spend that crypto, you can have a capital gain or loss as well. Crypto tax software imports your wallets and exchanges, works out cost basis and produces the forms. All three tools below price that work by your transaction count.
Cost by transaction count
What each tool charges for one tax year, by the number of transactions in that year:
| Transactions in the year | CoinLedger | Koinly | CoinTracker |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 100 | Hobbyist, USD 49 | Newbie, USD 49 | Base, USD 59 |
| Up to 250 | Investor, USD 99 | Hodler, USD 99 | Base+, USD 99 |
| Up to 1,000 | Investor, USD 99 | Hodler, USD 99 | Prime, USD 199 |
| Up to 2,500 | Pro, from USD 199 | Trader, from USD 199 | Prime+, USD 299 |
| Up to 3,000 | Pro, from USD 199 | Trader, from USD 199 | Ultra, USD 499 |
| Up to 10,000 | Pro tiers, priced in the app (Unlimited at 10,000+, USD 499) | Trader tiers, priced in the app | Ultra, USD 499 |
| Free tier | Tracking and gains overview | Tracking and gains preview (up to 10,000 transactions) | Tax summary and portfolio value |
| How you pay | One-time purchase per tax report | One-time purchase per tax year | Priced per year |
Each tool defines a transaction slightly differently:
- CoinTracker counts only the tax year you’re filing, never counts spam and dust, and excludes some staking rewards and interest (up to USD 25 on Base, unlimited from Prime).
- Koinly counts deposits, withdrawals and trades, but groups related transactions and filters spam.
- CoinLedger assigns a tier from the transactions you import. If you go over your tier later, you pay the difference to move up.
Worked example. A creator receives 12 monthly sponsor payments in USDC, converts each one to dollars, and makes 30 other swaps in the year. That’s about 54 transactions, which fits the cheapest paid tier on all three: $49 on CoinLedger or Koinly, $59 on CoinTracker. At 300 transactions, CoinLedger and Koinly charge $99, because their middle tier runs to 1,000. CoinTracker charges $199, because Prime is the next tier above 250.
