Assumptions & sources

Pure maths, no vendor data. Each month, existing members cancel at your churn rate, then new members join. Use your own churn figure; there's no universal benchmark.

  • Excludes sales tax/VAT/GST, refunds, chargebacks, payout and FX fees (unless toggled), and promotions.
  • No vendor data: this calculator only uses the numbers you enter.

How it works

  1. Members next month = members this month × (1 − churn) + new members.
  2. MRR = members × price. Net MRR also subtracts your fee drag (%).
  3. Steady state = new members ÷ churn. Growth slows toward this ceiling because cancellations eventually equal new joins.
  4. Lifetime value (gross) = price ÷ churn. Average lifetime = 1 ÷ churn months.

Worked example

At $30 a month, starting from 0 members, adding 20 a month with 5% monthly churn: after 12 months you'd have about 184 members and $5,515.68 MRR, with $39,202.10 collected in total. Membership levels off near 400 members, and each member is worth about $600 over their lifetime.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good churn rate?

We don't quote a benchmark because it varies widely by niche, price and community. Use your own cancellation data, or try a few values to see how sensitive your plan is.

Why does growth flatten?

Each month a fixed share of members cancels. As the member count grows, cancellations grow too, until they match new joins. That's the steady-state ceiling.

How do I include platform fees?

Paste the 'effective fee %' from the course platform fee calculator into the fee drag field.
