What the ATO rules need from software
- Every swap is a disposal. Crypto-to-crypto trades, conversions to AUD, gifts and purchases all trigger CGT events.
- Separate assets in AUD. Each crypto asset is a separate CGT asset, valued in Australian dollars.
- Losses, then discount. Capital losses come off gains first, then the 50% discount applies to assets held at least 12 months. A net capital loss can’t be deducted from other income.
- Tax year 1 July to 30 June. You report in the Capital gains section of myTax.

Use a free preview to check your transaction count and that swaps show as disposals before paying. This is general information, not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

The ATO treats selling, swapping, gifting, converting to currency and spending crypto as CGT events. Each asset is tracked separately in AUD, losses reduce gains, and residents get a 50% discount on assets held at least 12 months.
Which tools list an ATO-specific report?
CoinLedger's tax report page lists an 'Australia ATO MyTax Report'. Koinly lists international tax reports and supports Australian users. Check CoinTracker's Australian report in its free preview before paying.
Do these tools charge in AUD?
CoinLedger and Koinly list USD prices, so your card may add a conversion fee. CoinTracker says you can check out in your local currency. Check the total at checkout either way.
Which is cheapest for one tax year?
On published prices, CoinLedger and Koinly cost the same: $49 for 100 transactions and $99 for 1,000. CoinTracker starts at $59 for 100, but its yearly plan includes past years.
What are the refund terms?
CoinLedger allows 14 days for verified software limitations before any download. Koinly allows 7 days if no report was generated. CoinTracker allows 30 days if no tax forms were downloaded.
Can a tool replace a tax agent?
No. The tools calculate gains from imported data, but they can't decide whether you're an investor or a trader. This is general information, not tax advice; check with a registered tax agent.
