CoinLedger Form 8949: How to Generate It and the 1099-DA Boxes

Short answer
In CoinLedger, open Tax Reports, then IRS Forms, and generate Form 8949 or the consolidated version. For each exchange, you choose whether you got a 1099-DA with cost basis, without it, or none at all. You get a ZIP of forms for the tax year. Downloading needs a paid report: $49 for up to 100 transactions, $99 for 1,000, or from $199 for 3,000+.

How to generate Form 8949 in CoinLedger
- Import every exchange and wallet you used in the tax year, then clear the warnings CoinLedger flags for missing cost basis.
- Optional: upload each exchange’s 1099-DA in the 1099-DA Dashboard and review the matches.
- Go to Tax Reports, then Tax Report Downloads, then IRS Forms.
- Choose IRS Form 8949 (one per exchange) or IRS Form 8949 Consolidated, and press Generate.
- For each exchange, choose one of the following: a 1099-DA with cost basis, a 1099-DA without cost basis, or no 1099-DA.
- Download the ZIP. Your totals carry to Schedule D.
The Form 8949 boxes for digital assets
Starting with the 2025 instructions, the IRS gives digital assets their own boxes.
| Holding period | 1099-DA showing basis reported to IRS | 1099-DA, basis not reported | No 1099-DA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short-term (Part I) | Box G | Box H | Box I |
| Long-term (Part II) | Box J | Box K | Box L |
The IRS says not to use box C or box F for digital assets; use box I or box L. Check one box per Part, and use a separate Part for each box.
Using 1099-DA data
The 1099-DA Dashboard shows the exchange’s cost basis and proceeds alongside CoinLedger’s for every disposal. When generating the form, you can ignore the matching data, or use it so the form reflects what the exchange reported. If an exchange sends a corrected 1099-DA, replace the file and regenerate.

Who it fits, based on published features and pricing
This is a reading of published features and prices, not a tested recommendation. CoinLedger wasn’t tested hands-on for this page.
- Fits US filers who received 1099-DAs from several exchanges and want them reconciled before generating Form 8949.
- Check first if you have more than 3,000 transactions, in which case you’ll need extra transaction tiers, or if your activity includes business trading that belongs on another schedule.

Frequently asked questions
Where is Form 8949 in CoinLedger?
CoinLedger's help centre says to go to Tax Reports, then the Tax Report Downloads section, select IRS Forms, then choose IRS Form 8949 or IRS Form 8949 Consolidated and press Generate. The forms download as a ZIP folder.
Which 1099-DA option should I choose?
For each exchange, CoinLedger asks whether you received or expect a 1099-DA with cost basis, one without cost basis, or none. Match what the exchange actually sent. The choice controls which Form 8949 box is checked for that exchange's rows.
What are boxes G to L on Form 8949?
The IRS 2025 instructions add boxes for digital assets. G, H and I are short-term and J, K and L are long-term, split by whether a 1099-DA reported basis to the IRS, did not, or was not received. Box C and box F are not for digital assets.
Can I compare my 1099-DA with CoinLedger's numbers?
Yes. CoinLedger's 1099-DA Dashboard lets you upload each exchange's 1099-DA PDF and view matches side by side: cost basis and proceeds as reported against CoinLedger's own figures. You can then choose whether to use that matching data when generating forms.
Do I upload Form 8949 to TurboTax Online?
No. CoinLedger's TurboTax Online guide uses a separate TurboTax Digital Assets PDF and says not to upload Form 8949 itself.
Is Form 8949 free in CoinLedger?
No. Portfolio tracking and previews are free, but downloading a tax report costs $49 for up to 100 transactions, $99 for 1,000 or from $199 for 3,000+. Each report is a one-time purchase for one tax year.
Can I regenerate the form after fixing data?
CoinLedger's pricing page lists unlimited revisions, so you can re-run and re-calculate a report for the same year without paying again. Moving above your plan's transaction limit needs an upgrade.
