CoinLedger CSV Import: Universal Template Columns and Fixes

We may earn a commission from some links. It doesn’t affect our rankings.

Short answer

CoinLedger imports transactions from unsupported exchanges through its Universal Manual Import template. Copy it in Google Sheets, keep every column header, enter dates in UTC as mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss, leave unused cells blank, then download it as CSV and upload it under Other Account. Deposits and withdrawals need a Type.

When to use a CSV

CoinLedger offers two ways to add transactions from an exchange or wallet it doesn’t support: add single transactions in the app, or fill in the Universal Manual Import template. The template suits large numbers of transactions.

The columns

Column What goes in it Required?
Date (UTC) mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss, in UTC Yes (time optional)
Platform Exchange or wallet name Optional
Asset Sent / Amount Sent Outgoing asset and amount For trades and withdrawals
Asset Received / Amount Received Incoming asset and amount For trades and deposits
Fee Currency / Fee Amount Fee, if not already applied Optional
Type Transaction type For deposits and withdrawals
Description Your notes Optional
TxHash Transaction ID Optional

Accepted Type values

  • Incoming: Income, Interest, Mining, Staking, Hard Fork, Airdrop, Gift Received, Deposit (a non-taxable self-transfer).
  • Outgoing: Gift Sent, Casualty Loss, Theft Loss, Investment Loss, Interest Payment, Merchant Payment, Withdrawal (a non-taxable self-transfer).

CoinLedger notes that only Investment Loss is reported as a realised loss on Form 8949. Theft and Casualty Loss remove the asset from your balance without realising a loss. It suggests asking a tax professional before reporting an Investment Loss.

Step by step

  1. Copy the template in Google Sheets and delete the sample rows.
  2. Fill in one row per transaction, following the sample formatting exactly.
  3. Download it with File, Download, Comma Separated Values (.csv).
  4. Upload it in CoinLedger under the Other Account tab, then rename the import with Edit Name.

Formatting rules that stop failures

  • Don’t delete optional columns; leave them blank.
  • Don’t add currency symbols, or plus and minus signs.
  • Leave unused cells empty rather than entering 0, N/A or dashes.
  • If you paste from another sheet, paste without formatting (Ctrl or Cmd + Shift + V).

This is not tax advice. See CoinLedger review, CoinLedger Form 8949 and CoinLedger pricing.

Frequently asked questions

What columns does the template have?

Date (UTC), Platform, Asset Sent, Amount Sent, Asset Received, Amount Received, Fee Currency, Fee Amount, Type, Description and TxHash. Keep all of them, even optional ones, because deleting a column makes the import fail.

What date format does CoinLedger need?

Month-day-year in UTC, such as mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss. Time is optional and a dash can replace the slash. Remove characters like T, Z or + that some exchange exports add to timestamps.

Why did my CSV import fail?

CoinLedger's guide lists the usual causes: a deleted column, a wrong date format, currency symbols, plus or minus signs, or 0, N/A or dashes in cells that should be blank. A deposit or withdrawal without a Type also fails.

Do I need to fill in Type for trades?

No. For buys, sells and crypto-to-crypto trades, filling in both Asset Sent and Asset Received is enough. Type is mandatory only for deposits and withdrawals.

Can I put several exchanges in one file?

Yes. Use the Platform column to label each row. Rows don't need to be in date order; CoinLedger sorts them by timestamp on import.

Should I use Excel?

CoinLedger recommends Google Sheets, because Excel and Numbers often change formatting in ways that make the import fail. If you use another editor, keep the headers exactly as they are.

How do I add NFTs?

Enter them as a Trade. First add a custom asset for the NFT in your CoinLedger account, or the import can't map the row to it.
